Meet John and Nancy, the proud owners of CFO Trading Company and Yelping Dog Wine in Historic Downtown Staunton. The couple moved to Staunton in 2013 when they opened up Yelping Dog Wine, a wine bar and restaurant. With their children involved in theater and the arts, they were drawn to Staunton and the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse, a unique one of a kind recreation of London’s Globe Theater. These day trips sparked their deep love for the city and eventually led them to move down in 2013.
CFO Trading Company, named after John and Nancy’s three dogs Charlie, Franklin, and Oscar, fills a void in Staunton. Staunton has always had a lively downtown, but it was missing a men’s clothing and men's gifts store. John decided that CFO Trading Company would carry traditional American vendors such as Pendleton Wool, Duck Head, Stanley and Frost River Bags. John also wanted to create a store that offered an assortment of gifts and other products so shoppers could find the perfect gift for any man all under one roof.
John has spent 40 years in big box retail and noticed a shift in customer service. Big retail stores started to lose the person-to-person connection, the understanding of where the products came from, and little personal touches that one on one contact brings. Customers enjoy a connection to the owners and where the products come from. Specialty stores bring life to small towns. The stories behind the American companies carried by CFO Trading Company are steeped in tradition and the American Dream.
Despite the pandemic, Nancy and John decided to open CFO Trading Company in October of 2020. Once the store located next to Yelping Dog Wine became vacant, they came up with a great idea of connecting both businesses by adding a set of doors to join the two. When you visit Yelping Dog Wine you are able to take your drink and walk next door to browse CFO Trading Company while enjoying fantastic wine and beer.
